What does otoplasty correct?
It corrects prominent ears, absent cartilage folds or asymmetry between them. It can be done in childhood (once the ear reaches its size, around age 6) or in adulthood.
Technique
Through an incision hidden in the fold behind the ear, the cartilage is reshaped with sutures that create or reinforce natural folds and bring the ear closer to the head. The scar stays concealed.
Who is a good candidate?
Children from age 6, adolescents or adults who feel uncomfortable with the projection of their ears, in good health.
Recovery · step by step
- Days 1–5Continuous protective band; mild discomfort.
- Week 1–2Return to school or work; nighttime band.
- Weeks 3–4Return to sport avoiding contact.
- Months 1–3The result stabilizes.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can it be done?
From roughly age 6, once the ear has reached its size. It is also performed in adults with no age limit.
Is the scar noticeable?
It is hidden in the fold behind the ear, so in practice it is not visible.
Can the ears protrude again?
The technique aims for a stable result. Following band instructions protects the outcome during healing.
